Romeo and Juliet as the basis for our theatrical effort.

Authors Notes:

Romeo and Juliet is a story based on feuding families. The basic premise is what would happen if the children of these two families fell in love. The world famous balcony scene is the hallmark of the play. The youth and inexperience of the two main characters leads to the tragedies of the play: the murder of a best friend, Mercuito, and a cousin, Tybalt, which results in the banishment of Romeo. The hasty marriage, which they saw as the means for ending the feud and the salvation of the two families, only intensifies the tragedy. The “fake death” was the solution to the complications of the plot but an undelivered letter ends that dream in a double suicide.
In Romero and Miss Julie the conflict is between the Casper (Capulets) and Monterey (Montagues) families. The conflict is one of basic distrust of the different or unknown (Actors, Vagabonds, and Wanders). There is no room in the town of Verona with its classic mid-American values as demonstrated by the Casper family for these “gypsies,” the Monterey family, who embody “the different and the unknown “and therefore all things evil. In this modernization of Shakespeare’s basic story, it is the elders that fall in love: Romero (Romeo) and Miss Julie (Juliet).
At the beginning of Romeo and Juliet Romeo is madly in love with Rosalind and is pining for her. It is this unrequited love that leads him to the Capulet’s masked ball to see her, where he meets Juliet. The famous balcony scene follows. In Romero and Miss Julie, Romero is tricked by the granddaughter, Julieanne, into a “rendezvous.” This leads to a balcony scene in which he really “sees” Miss Julie for the first time. They find shared lost dreams of the past in each other and fall in love. A secret marriage follows, a night “on the town.”
This time, it is their experiences that lead to the tragedy of the adapted play. Their desire for love, companionship, and understanding based on their earlier marriages that they do not have now. This hasty marriage plus the conflict between Tyrome (Tybalt and Montague characters combined) and his mother Miss Julie over granting the Monterey Traveling Family Show the right to stage and perform on Casper land leads to the tragedy. As Romeo was banished to Verona for the breaking of the Price’s edict of no more fighting and the resulting deaths of members of the two family, Miss Julie is “banished” to The Institution, a mental hospital where she had resided before after the loss of her first husband. Her actions were the final proof to her son Tyrome that she had indeed suffered another mental breakdown.
Juliet’s “fake death” is paralleled by Miss Julie’s “fake lobotomy.” As Romeo did not know of the “fake death” and thought it real, Romero does not know of the “fake lobotomy” and thinks it real. It does not result in suicide as in Romeo and Juliet; although, and the ending is.....well, you have to see it to believe it!
